For a tour of this apartment and some explanation of some of our renovations, read from the bottom up, beginning with the kitchen.

The Bedroom

The best thing about this bedroom besides that it sleeps 2 1/2 people is the windows that corner the room and let in a lot of light both morning and evening.

The closet is a new addition to the apartment. The apartment before renovation had a large door that could have held french doors, but held an accordion door instead. It also had a very awkwardly placed small closet to the right of the doors. Because privacy for nap time was needed and we had too many clothes, we opted to tear down the door frame, build the larger closet and put in a standard door.

As you can also see from the picture there is additional storage above.

Bookshelves were built in for our small book collection.

And another great feature about this apartment. It is in the back, so it doesn't get the loud street traffic, and there are no buildings right next to it so you don't have to look at brick walls when you open the window shades.

The bathroom

Like most NY bathrooms, this one isn't too big. But it functions, and looks great. The bathtub and floor is tiled with white penny tile, and the walls are painted in a refreshing sea green. I believe all bathrooms should look as close to a spa as possible.

Before we moved in we actually gutted the bathroom down to the steel beams, replacing everything. We chose modern fixtures that complimented the rest of the apartment.

The toilet is a TOTO toilet. What we like most about it is the slow closing lid, and the covered pipes.

The shower fixtures are by Brizo.

The sink is a Duravit sink. Because the bathroom is small we opted to not put in a vanity. Instead this Duravit sink has an extended right ledge that allows space for resting bathroom necessities. The sink fixture is also Brizo.

There is a mirror/cabinet above the sink. It holds all of our bathroom stuff.

The living area

Hard to say what I love most about this room. Perhaps it is the brick wall that extends from the entry to the bedroom, giving the apartment a NY loft kind of a feel, or how great mid-century furniture looks when up against it.

As you can see from the next two pictures, the room gets a lot of sunlight. This is particularly nice when I am home in the middle of the day.

To solve the never ending space issue and to create an interesting focal point, we chose to build in a console with cabinets above. This helps hide clutter and everything else.

The picture below shows how we covered up the non-working fireplace. This created a break in the brick and now provides our backdrop for our projector. A flat screen wouldn't look bad here either.

The high ceilings and openness of this room make it a great place for entertaining and relaxing. On the ceiling is also a modern fan that not only looks great but provides function as well.

The kitchen

This is a great view of our place just after you have hung up your coat and walked in a few feet. As you can see, there is a closet to the right, and then the kitchen begins.

The kitchen, is one of my favorite things about this apartment. At first, I wasn't crazy about the kitchen's location, and I even considered moving it so it faced the living area. But after living in the apartment, I now love the fact that the kitchen seems separated from the living space, and doesn't interfere, but I can still watch T.V. while I cook.

This is the washer and dryer. I love the fact it has a door so that it isn't exposed. You wouldn't even know it was there unless I was in the middle of doing laundry.

Next, the cooking space. We decided to take advantage of the potential cooking space and do an under the counter fridge, far right. This has been great. It is actually quite deep and holds plenty of groceries for 2 1/2 people. The ice box holds quite a bit too, nothing in bulk though. To create a minimal look and modern look we opted for a custom stainless steel countertop and back splash. This is great because we were able to have a sink in the middle of it and extend it around the wall for a more counter space and a bar. We love the stainless steel, you don't need to put trivets down when you cook.

Under the sink is more storage, and a Fisher Paykel dish drawer. This has been a life saver. It holds more than a days worth of dishes, and I love the fact it is integrated.

To take advantage of even more counter space we also opted for a flat small AEG electric cooktop. The other great thing about this is we don't have to pay for any gas bills.

This is a great picture that allows you to see the built in cabinetry. Because we don't have a pantry, we opted to go all the way up to the ceiling with storage. You need a stool to get up to the top, but it solves the issue of where to put stuff you don't use often. When we rennovated, we also took out the dropped ceiling and put in recessed lighting. The kitchen now feels much bigger and more open.
